ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
Root canal treatment is a procedure performed to clean the infected or damaged nerve tissue (pulp) inside the tooth, fill the root canals, and save the tooth.
It is applied in cases where the nerves are damaged due to tooth decay or trauma.
Root Canal Treatment Process:
1. Before the Treatment:
- Examination and X-ray: The dentist examines the condition of the tooth and takes an X-ray.
- Local Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is applied to the tooth and surrounding area to prevent pain during the procedure.
- Opening the Tooth: The decayed part is cleaned, and an opening is made at the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp tissue.
2. Treatment Process:
- Canal Cleaning: The nerve and infected tissue inside the root canals are cleaned using special tools.
- Disinfection: The canals are washed with antiseptic solutions to reduce the risk of infection.
- Filling: The canals are filled and sealed with a special biocompatible filling material.
- Temporary or Permanent Filling: After the procedure, the top of the tooth is covered with either a temporary or permanent filling.
3. After the Treatment:
- Pain and Sensitivity: Mild pain or sensitivity may occur for a few days after the procedure. Painkillers can help manage discomfort.
- Permanent Filling or Crown: To enhance the durability of the treated tooth, a dental crown is usually recommended.
- Oral Hygiene: It is important to brush your teeth regularly, use dental floss, and rinse with mouthwash.
Precautions Before Treatment:
- Take the medications prescribed by your dentist.
- Avoid extremely hot or cold foods.
- Eat a full meal and drink plenty of water on the day of the treatment.
Precautions After Treatment:
- Avoid eating for a few hours.
- Do not consume hard foods for a few days.
- Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly.
- Do not skip follow-up appointments with your dentist.
When performed correctly, a root canal treatment can help preserve the tooth for many years.
If you experience severe pain or swelling, consult your dentist immediately.
