CROWNS & BRIDGES
Dental crowns and bridges are fixed prostheses used to restore damaged, worn, or missing teeth and improve aesthetic appearance.
A crown (cap) covers and protects a single tooth, while a bridge replaces missing teeth, filling the gap between existing teeth.
Types of Crowns and Bridges:
1. Porcelain Crowns and Bridges
- The type of restoration that most closely resembles natural teeth.
- Typically made as metal-supported or full porcelain.
- Provides excellent aesthetic results, especially for front teeth.
2. Zirconium Crowns and Bridges
- A metal-free, biocompatible, and highly aesthetic restoration.
- Durable and can be used for back teeth as well.
- Has light transmission properties, making it look very similar to natural teeth.
3. Metal-Supported Porcelain Crowns and Bridges
- Has a metal substructure with a porcelain covering.
- Highly durable, making it ideal for back teeth that endure strong chewing forces.
- Aesthetically, it has a lower performance compared to full porcelain or zirconium crowns.
4. Gold or Metal Crowns
- Extremely durable and long-lasting.
- Generally used for back teeth, where chewing forces are strongest.
- Not preferred for front teeth due to aesthetic reasons.
Crown and Bridge Treatment Process
1. Before Treatment:
- The dentist examines the patient's dental structure and determines the most suitable crown or bridge type.li>
- If necessary, X-rays are taken to assess the condition of missing or damaged teeth.
- Impressions are taken to create custom prostheses for the patient.
2. Treatment Process::
- Tooth Preparation: The teeth that will receive the crown or bridge are reshaped and reduced in size.
- Impression Taking: Molds of the teeth are taken to create a custom-designed crown or bridge in a laboratory.
- Temporary Crown/Bridge: Temporary restorations may be placed to protect the teeth while the permanent ones are being prepared.
- Permanent Placement: The final crown or bridge is cemented onto the teeth using special adhesives.
- Final Adjustments: The fit and comfort of the crown or bridge are checked, and minor modifications are made if necessary.
Precautions Before Treatment:
- Maintain good oral hygiene and follow your dentist’s cleaning recommendations.
- Discuss your expectations with your dentist before the procedure.
